New
Orleans, Louisiana, is considered to be the birthplace of jazz
and rock n’roll.
‘Northampton meets New Orleans’ will
present a series of free concerts
in the market square on carnival weekend.
The young musicians are from the ‘6th ward’, a
neighbourhood which is considered to be the oldest black community
in the U.S. It is a neglected area in the heart
of the inner-city with a profound music culture.
The 10 musicians from the 6th ward have had little formal training
and have learnt their
music from the streets of this historic
neighbourhood.
The band plays dynamic, exhuberant and joyful interpretations
of the music of Louis Armstrong
and Fats Domino with its deep
roots in the Baptist Church.
Our sincere thanks to the people of Northampton for helping
to make this important event possible.
